"GhostZ" (GhostZ)

Yeah, I know, I'm a year behind. Anything I should know before I fire it up?
I finally caved, tired of not having any online racing action since they shut down GT5's online earlier this year. (Which was a brilliant move by PD, as I imagine it shuffled people over to GT6 quickly). Should be arriving any minute now from Amazon.
I plan to also look into (but not do, obviously, because it violates the EULA and I certainly wouldn't do that! Nope nope nope!) custom firmware mods for engine swaps and wheel/tire combo changes, maybe turbo alterations, all of which I DID NOT do in GT5 also, so if anyone here has info regarding that (in particular what firmware I need to install). Supposedly GT6 has put on dual-encryption on the save files, which complicates things and I'm not sure I'd be able to read the hex code anymore because of it, so good on them for preventing people from being all illegal and stuff.
Needless to say, driving a 240Z with suspension components and rims from a Miata Race Car, an R32 Nismo motor, R32 GTS-T 5-speed RWD transmission, LSD from a 240SX, and dual snails off an R35 would be something totally fun to make and not at all what I did in GT5 because that's illegal.

It's basically just GT5 with some minor improvements and slightly unstable online.

Define "unstable"?

I seem to be regularly dropped from games and even more often get a warning message basically saying "you cant join this lobby at this time." I have decent enough internet (20mb/s) and know a fair few others who have had issues, so its either psn or the gt6 servers.

GT5 had trouble with international play, sometimes a player in South Korea or another country could join a room and suddenly affect a lot of connections at once. It's possible they haven't figured out those bugs yet, but is it worse than GT5 was?

From what I've seen it's pretty similar to gt5 in regards of reliability but to be honest I only had maybe 15-20 hours in gt5 online so I'm not that experienced with it.

Thanks!
Either way, I'm sure it won't be bad. It's down to $30, which I can justify.

I was a little disappointed with it because I paid full price at launch, but i've still played it a fair bit so for $30 you should be happy enough.

Get ready for an eternity of install and required updates that span from release until now.
For $30, you might get enjoyment out of it. I feel like I was ripped off because there are features listed on the box that still aren't in the game. Those features were some of the more important ones for me, so I'm pretty jaded towards the whole franchise now. I don't like where its going. Its turned into a recruitment tool for a niche racing series now, and the game side of it has been nearly completely ignored. Also, the graphics are split between old gen and current gen and not well I might add. It often looks like shit when light is added to the environments.
Meh, whatever. I'm over it. I want Project Cars to release so I can stop bitching about how much of a let-down GT is becoming.

Don't worry about the online gameplay too much. you may not be able to play it tonight though, because there's a shit ton of downloads you'll need to do before playing.

Game isn't very good at all. I would avoid it.

Oh maaaan I forgot about that. They're already up to like, 1.13 or something, right?

Well, I don't have an Xbox or a PS4 (nor do I want to drop the dough to get one) my PC can't handle most games, and I loved GT5, so its more of a replacement for GT5 than anything else. Are there better PS3 racing sims out there that I don't know about?

If you only have PS3 idk what else is out there but i'm sure there is some option.
GT6 is serviceable but if you have GT5 you won't get anymore more from GT6. If you like GT5 might as well get it. Wasn't fond of GT5 myself either.

They shut down GT5's online capability. That is a pretty huge hit on its replay value.

Yes, and one or two of those updates were at least a gigabyte large. when I switched my 12gb flash memory over to an HDD, I had completed the switch in the late AM and let the game begin downloading the updates to the new memory drive. I did some math by view of the download percentage complete and predicted the downloads would take at least one full night of sleeping. That was back in August however, over a 3.0mbps connection. I'm sure you could do some math as well to predict how long you'll be waiting.

DLing shouldn't be a problem (50Mbps wired ethernet connection), but install time worries me. I've got a very early older PS3, with a small, slow hard drive.

I'm guessing your updates will probably be done in 2-3 hours, maximum.

Thanks. That's not TOO bad. I imagine most of those are adding vehicles like the Vision GT series cars.

I think the problem is that sales are still so good from GT5 that they didn't see a need to improve.
EDIT: Looking at the numbers, GT5 was not only the best selling PS3 game (10mil), but sold almost double what the next best (Last of Us, MGS4, 6 mil each) sold. GT5 Prologue sold 5mil on its own too. It's hard for shareholders and executives who never play the game to justify a bunch of risky changes and improvements in light of that.

Actually, the Vision GT updates are fairly small. The biggest ones will be the Ayrton Senna event (absolutely fantastic), the additions of track Brands Hatch 1980s layout, Circuito De La Sierra (longest original circuit, stretches for 16 miles) and Red Bull X Challenge.

I've been on a hardcore GT6 kick the last two days after I (finally) downloaded 1.14. What's your gamertag?

You should know that Forza 5 is better.
Just kidding, I like it better but I'm not that kind of person. GT6 has its good points: there's so many cars! And a huge variety too.

I've heard pretty good things about Forza though, and from what I've read it looks like GT's higher sales numbers lulled them into making a worse game/not keeping up, despite the variety of cars.
However, I'm not about to go shell out money for an Xbox and a live account just so I can play one game casually.

Please don't take this seriously, I was just joking. If I had a PS3 I'd just go buy GT6 or GT5 as well, there's no good reason to buy a whole new console. Also, I just realized that GT6 is last-gen. Forza 4, then.

If you love GT5, then you'll like GT6 too. Tons of smart improvements to little annoyances in GT5. Maybe in GT7 they'll fix the engine noises...

Or add realistic engine/part swapping. Gran Turismo rides that very weird line where you have complete marginal control over all sorts of little statistics about your car with the tuning, but the upgrades are all generalized and nonspecific.

The sales numbers are mostly because GT5 arrived on the heels of the very good GT4. The franchise is in a steep slide right now. Basically every other racing game is better. All of the important parameters took a shit for GT6. The developers focused on the up-front beauty of (some) of the models. The really shining point of the game is the course selection. But physics took a step backwards, sound is still terrible, and getting worse for some odd reason after the last update. Online works some of the time, which doesn't bode well in a racing game. Features were stripped from GT5 like course creator and speed test. Every aspect of the engine power delivery is a sham. They have not even gotten close to simulating forced induction.
I could go on and on with what is wrong, but its not worth it.
If you get it, I genuinely hope you enjoy it. I used to be the hugest GT fanboy.
